Why You Can’t Make Money Writing

By Mariah J Bliss

It goes without saying that as a freelance writer, you have a single dream: to make money writing.

You’ve been plugging away for weeks… months… perhaps even years… hoping against hope that you’ll finally land the kind of clients who will pay you top dollar for your work. You’ve browsed through job board sites and even Craigslist ads in the hopes of coming across freelance writing jobs that will set you up for permanent success.

But for some reason, you just can’t make money writing.

And I’m about to tell you why.

Are You Falling Victim To These Classic Mistakes?

When it comes to making money with your writing, there are a few classic “mistakes” that can actually implode your freelance writing business. These mistakes may seem innocent enough – but make just a couple of them, and you’ll quickly end up getting stuck in a cycle of writing articles for mere pennies.

So what mistakes am I talking about? Check them out to see if you’re falling victim to these classic freelance writing mistakes:

Not Charging Enough Money For Your Work

My fellow freelancers, I know it can be hard to put a high number on your writing skills. If you’re naturally a good writer, you might not necessarily feel justified in charging higher prices. After all, it’s not like you went to college for writing, or had to go through years of training to wield your way with words… right?

Actually, nothing could be further from the truth. There are VERY few good writers out there – just browse through a handful of websites, and you’ll quickly see how many poor writers there are on the World Wide Web. If you happen to include yourself in the gifted group, then you need to pluck up the courage and charge more for your work. Knowing how to string together a thought-provoking and compelling sentence is a skill that’s just as valuable as designing a website.

So treat it as such!

Making It All About You

Have you ever bid on a freelance writing job that was posted on a job board site? Wondering why you got passed over, despite highlighting all of your fantastic skills? Here’s a helpful hint: it’s probably because you made the proposal all about you.

Clients are inundated with proposals from writers with tons of degrees, publishing credits, and the like. Some clients may even hire you based on the fact that your short story was published in a literary magazine five years ago. But if you really want to make money writing, you need to make the proposal all about your prospective client’s needs. What do they want? What do they need to see from your writing skills?

For example, saying “My SEO writing skills will propel your company’s website straight to the top of major search engines” is a lot more engaging and appealing than “I’m an experienced SEO writer.”

If you were the client, I have a sneaking suspicion you’d hire the writer of the first sentence!
