I have meet a kindred spirit. Although, I will be turning 59 quite soon, from the age of 5 my life has been just like this. I would slip away into the world of my imagination, and once I could write, I just had to capture it on paper. And one it was on paper, I could return to my own world any time I chose and take up where I left off with my waking dream. I often shared these musings and writings with my family and friends, later my teachers and mentors, and they always said be a writer. Well it wasnt until recently, I took it all to heart and started on a serious free-lance career, after retiring from hospice nursing. Can you imagine going back to college at my age? Well, it has been wonderful. E-books, flash fiction, all those new things to learn about, including this lovely website to join for guidance and contests. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I am just as crazy myself, I must write!

In reply to Keith Channing. Thanks for the comment Keith. I haven't been to the Auvergne, but some quiet time is wonderful, although here there is always some background noise, birds singing, the sound of tractors in the distance and even the whirring of my brain once it gets going. It's always difficult to rely on memory but, memories can form a great starting point backed up by meticulous research. Research can be time consuming but I now quite enjoy that aspect of it. Good luck with your writing projects.

Here in the Auvergne the scenery is also a good source of inspiration, as are the changing faces of agriculture during the year. It is also quiet enough to allow for some excellent thinking time, whilst walking the dogs. My current WIP (OK, my first) relies more on memory and research, as it is based, largely, in a part of East Africa where I spent two years in the 1980s. As elements of the story have connections with current day events, research takes on an importance as great as, if not greater than memory.

I totally agree. I worked for silly money when I first started, just to get up and running. However I made a conscious effort to continually look for better jobs and gradually I replaced all the lower paid ones. It is something I still do today to ensure my pay improves over time.

Annette, you are so right about the power of fear stopping so many of us from writing! The fear of failure can be huge and we all suffer from it. I think just knowing that other writers experience it too helps the acknowledgement process. Then all we have to do is push that confidence-sapping gremlin from our shoulder and get on with creating the best work we can.

Apologies for the delay in responding.
This competition is now closed and the judging process will be starting in due course. Always go by the closing date. We never extend this date and if you submit work after the closing date, we cannot accept it or consider it.
