Freelance Work From Home- But Where Is Your Motivation?

Posted By annette young on December 31, 2010

It sounds idyllic doesn’t it? No more having to traipse in to your boring job in the real world and instead, you can do your freelance work from home. Whilst others are out there braving the extreme weather conditions or sitting in traffic jams, you could be sitting at home watching breakfast tv followed by a little self indulging as you watch the Jeremy Kyle show and realise that your own life is not quite so bad after all. Plus, you are doing the job of your dreams and all those free hours stretch before you., fantastic,  but where is your motivation to work?

Anyone who has ever had the opportunity to work from home will tell you that it is a double edged sword. It is fantastic to have your own little home office, you have much more control over your working life but, getting started and sticking to the tasks at hand can be difficult.  There are a million and one distractions when working from home, the TV for one because that favourite program is just going to tempt you to stop working for a period of time. Writers block can strike too just when you need to have a steady flow of words at your disposal, and after all, if you decide to do freelance work from home, it means that you work with diligence and the same sense of motivation as if you had your boss stood over you cracking the whip.

If you have children at home or a partner, there are going to be distractions and for the freelance writer, distractions can end any creative flow quite readily.

Eliminating any disruptions or at least reducing them greatly is a must if you are going to do freelance work from home and be successful at it and spelling out your needs to loved ones can be quite difficult initially too but it’s worth empathising the point. If you get disrupted, you won’t get paid or you won’t get paid as quickly.

I can sympathise with those just starting out as a freelancer because sometimes I have made every excuse under the sun to avoid sitting down at my desk and starting to write. Sometimes I have had to drag the words out of me and try to make them resemble something of interest on my computer screen and on those days, distractions become a welcome break from the hard slog of unproductivity.

However you fire up your sense of motivation, make sure you can tap into it at will because you will need to be ultra disciplined if you want to do freelance work from home, it might not be easy but it’s worth it in the long run.
