Affirmations for Writers: 3 Self-Talk Secrets

By Angela Booth

Want to improve your writing, and your life? Use affirmations. Affirmations are positive statements which we make to ourselves. They’re a form of autosuggestion. We’re affected by suggestions everywhere we go every day, both from other people, and from powerful advertising.

Emile Coue is the father of autosuggestion. He was a French psychologist and pharmacist, who noticed that if he praised a medicine he was making up for a patient, that medicine was likely to be more effective. He went on to explore hypnosis, and the power of imagination.

Coue is best remembered for his self-help mantra: “Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better”.

Perhaps you’ve tried to use affirmations, and decided that they didn’t work for you, because you don’t believe them. You don’t need to believe your affirmations. On the contrary. You’re making suggestions to your subconscious mind, and these suggestions will change your behavior, whether you “believe” them or not.

You can see suggestions working every day in advertising. For example, you find yourself stopping at a fast food outlet on the way home from work. Or, you buy a new product at the supermarket. You’re not even aware that advertising manipulated your behavior, but it did.

Aside from advertising, other people make suggestions to us; some people are masterful manipulators.

We also make suggestions to ourselves: this is self-talk.

Now you’re aware of the power of suggestion in manipulating behavior, let’s look at three self-talk secrets which will help you to become a better writer.

1. Use Self-Talk to Help, Not Harm

You’re talking to yourself every day, all day long. Unfortunately, much of this self-talk is negative. Once you become aware of your own negativity, you can change it.

All you need to do is create some affirmations. Remember, you can use affirmations without believing them. They will change your behavior no matter what you think you believe.

Create a couple of affirmations to help your writing. For example:

* I now easily find time to write each day;

* Writing is easy and fun for me.

Create your own affirmations to help you to achieve your writing goals.

2. Repetition Is the Key to Autosuggestion

The more you repeat an autosuggestion (affirmation), the more effective it will be.

Once you’ve created a couple of affirmations, repeat them silently to yourself as you go about your day. I like to repeat mine when I’m on my daily walk.

They’ll help you to relax if you repeat them while you’re driving. You won’t get bored or irritated in traffic.

3. What You “See” Is What You Get

You can boost the effectiveness of your auto-suggestions if you use your imagination while you’re repeating them.

Imagine that your writing is improving. Imagine that you’re selling more of your writing. Imagine that you’re finding time to write, and are enjoying the writing you do.

Everyone imagines in a different way. Don’t worry if you can’t actually visualize anything. For some people, imagination works via their auditory sense rather than their visual sense.

To become a better writer, you need to be in control of your mind. Your affirmations will help. Over time, as you continue to use them, your self-talk will become more positive naturally.
