    Hi!

Okay this may be an extremely odd question but I’m new to writing competitions in general… When you say that a submission must be unpublished what does that mean exactly? I understand that it cannot be published in any literary publication etc but what about in an online blog or something like that where it’s not being considered for publishing but it is being read by people (hopefully)? Does that still count as publishing by competition standards these days? I hope my question isn’t confusing or terribly stupid. I just don’t want to submit something that I may have previously shared on my blog among my friends for feedback.

    Thanks,
    Julianne

Also, do submissions need to be included in the body of the email or sent as an attachment?

    Hello there,

in response to your questions I would wager that submissions should be sent as attachments: preferably PDF format. Secondly, I would also classify online blogs or any other public internet site “published.” The author’s association I am a member of recently discussed this and the president of the group told us that *any* form of internet publishing is considered “published.” So as a general rule, don’t publish anything on the internet you might want to use later.

I think your site is truly inventive and intriguing!

I’ve just paid to enter the First Page Competition (thrice, actually).

My 3 questions: when will winners be announced?

Will readers be able to read the work of winners and 2nd, 3rd runners-up?

Will both a Long-List & Short-List be announced? (We “creative writers” toil so hard for – often – no money, that knowing we made a Long-List, let alone a Short-List, can sometimes give us the strength and cheer to go on…not enough literary competitions declare Long-Lists – and Short-Lists – and I cannot imagine any writer who doesn’t think that doing so is a wonderful idea!)

    Thank you so much,

  5. Hi Shela,
Thank you for your message. I’m glad you like the site.
It can take a while to judge the submissions depending on the number received. We judge each one individually and it’s a time-restrained process but we want to ensure that the best one wins. We only publish the winner so that writers can go and re-submit their work elsewhere as many publishers will not accept previously published work.
We have been considering publishing the names of those short listed though so thanks for the suggestion.
    Best wishes and good luck
    Annette

    Hey Annette -

Thanks for the speedy reply – and you got the capital L in my name right – thanks :)

Re: when winners will be announced – do you have a ROUGH idea – the month or even the season, for example? This would help a lot.

    Merci!

  7. Hi SheLa,
The First Page Fiction competition closed yesterday so the first step for us is to compile a full list of all submissions- check that the rules have been adhered to and eliminate some if not. Then we begin the process of reading each and every one. At the moment, I am not sure how many submissions we received so my estimate may not be accurate but I would say if you allow six weeks approximately, this would give us time to ensure that we choose the best submission.
    Best wishes,
    Annette

Please can you tell me when you expect to announce the results of the First Page Fiction Competition? If I am not a winner I would like to submit my entry elsewhere.

Where can I find the results, please?
    Wendy

  15. Hi Wendy,
On the left hand margin is a list of all the pages. Look for Competition Winners and then you will see that the First Page winner is right at the bottom.
    Hope you enjoy it.
    Annette
